Why do we celebrate International Literacy Day on September 8th?International Literacy Day (ILD) festivities have been held every year since 1967 to raise awareness of the value of literacy as a matter of human rights and dignity and to push the literacy agenda in the direction of a more literate and sustainable society. The concept for International Literacy Day was first put up in 1965 at the World Conference of Ministers of Education for the Elimination of Illiteracy, which was sponsored by Iran.
