The popular wintertime Punjabi traditional festival Lohri is mostly observed in Northern India. The Lohri celebration has various meanings and tales, many of which relate to the Punjab region. The festival is thought by many to signal the end of the winter solstice. In the northern part of the Indian subcontinent, people celebrate Lohri to welcome the end of winter, longer days, and the sun’s ascent to the northern hemisphere. On the lunisolar Punjabi calendar, it is observed the evening before Maghi and usually always falls on January 13.
