The Gateway of India was constructed to honor George V, Emperor of India, and Mary of Teck, Empress Consort, who made their maiden visit to India on December 2, 1911, at Apollo Bunder in Mumbai, ahead of the Delhi Durbar. It was built from yellow basalt and strong concrete. It is the first building to be sighted when one reaches Mumbai by sea route.
