German chemist Walther Hermann Nernst is known for his work in solid-state physics, electrochemistry, physical chemistry, and thermodynamics. He won the 1920 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery of the Nernst heat theorem, which paved the way for the third law of thermodynamics. He is also known for developing the Nernst equation in 1887.
