José Echegaray made his literary debut rather late, in 1874, at the age of 42. After that, he enjoyed a successful career, releasing two plays on average every year for the rest of his life. He was a mathematician, engineer, and administrator. He built his plays with the same regard for exactitude and duty that inspired his public life. Most of his plays are about conflicts surrounding duty, and he defended the theme with uncompromising severity. His choice of subjects reveals his lofty romanticism.
