The Hindu belief of Govardhan Puja is that Lord Krishna wanted to destroy Indra’s haughtiness. To do this, he lifted the Govardhan mountain onto his little finger and shielded the Gokul inhabitants from Indra. Following this, it is said that Lord Krishna personally gave the order to pay 56 bounties on the day of Kartik Shukla Pratipada to worship Govardhan Parvat. Since then, Govardhan Puja has been practiced and is still performed, and its annual celebration is observed.
