This festival is mentioned in several stories. The ball is said to have fallen in as Lord Krishna was playing near the Yamuna River. According to one legend, Lord Krishna was playing along the Yamuna River when the ball dropped in, and as he entered the water, Kaliya assaulted him. Kaliya assaulted Krishna as soon as he entered the water. After Lord Krishna vanquished Kaliya Nag, the serpent, and his wives begged for Krishna’s life when they realized he was no ordinary youngster. After he promised Krishna that he wouldn’t bother the people of Gokul any longer, Krishna saved his life. Nag Panchami is celebrated to honor Krishna’s triumph.
