Why do we celebrate Ugadi?According to the Hindu calendar, New Year’s Day is Ugadi or Yugadi, sometimes referred to as Samvatsardi, which denotes the beginning of the year. The Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Goa all observe it. It is observed in these regions on the first day of the Hindu lunisolar month of Chaitra. This often occurs in late March or early April according to the Gregorian calendar. In Tamil, it also happens occasionally on the day after Amavasya with the 27th Nakshatra, Revati, during the months of Panguni or Chithrai. Ugadi Day is celebrated on the first new moon following the March Equinox.
