Why do we celebrate Vijayadashami? The end of Navaratri marks the yearly celebration of Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra, Dasara or Dashain. On the tenth day of the seventh Hindu lunisolar month of Ashvin, it is celebrated. Generally speaking, the celebration takes place around September and October of the Gregorian calendar. Two stories are connected to the celebration of Dussehra in Hindu mythology, which symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. It is said that on this day, Durga conquered Mahishasura after a bloody conflict that lasted more than nine days. According to a different mythology, Dussehra is a day to commemorate Rama’s victory over the ten-headed demon king of Lanka, Ravana.
