Malala was attacked by a Taliban gunman on October 9, 2012, as she was returning home from school. He shot her twice, once in the head and once in the neck. In recognition of Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, who rose to prominence as the face of the global movement for girls’ education, the United Nations designated July 12 as Malala Day.
