The Davy Medal had been awarded to Adolf von Baeyer by the Royal Society of London in 1881 in recognition of his work with indigo. In 1884, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences elected him as a foreign honorary member. He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1905 “in recognition of his services in the advancement of organic chemistry and the chemical industry, through his work on organic dyes and hydroaromatic compounds,” and he continued to work as one of the most well-known professors in the organic chemistry field until just one year before his passing.
