A Swiss chemist was Alfred Werner. For proposing the octahedral configuration of transition metal complexes, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1913. Modern coordination chemistry was developed by Werner. He was the first inorganic chemist to be awarded the Nobel Prize.
